How fleet cameras can save money on fuel and other costs

Jun. 11, 2019

Running a fleet of commercial vehicles is an expensive business, and if you’re looking to make fuel efficiencies and cut costs generally, ensuring all your vehicles have mobile digital recording on board may not seem like the obvious way to save money.

It’s a well-known fact people tend to behave better when they’re being watched. When your drivers are out on the road, without a vehicle camera system, you have no control over the way they drive. Bad driving habits such as excessive acceleration, or constant braking demonstrating a lack of attention to the vehicle in front, put extra strain on your vehicle’s components, including brake pad and discs, axles, tires and suspension. For optimum savings in fuel costs, the objective is smooth driving to keep the vehicle at a consistent speed. The ability to monitor drivers means careless driving can be picked up, and further training given if necessary, leading to fuel-efficient driving and a reduction in wear and part replacement.

With an in-cab camera, you are also ensuring your employees are completing their journeys within the agreed timescales, with no extra stops on the way for personal reasons or lingering over breaks. The addition of GPS tracking means you can ensure that your fleet is always where it’s meant to be, and if one driver regularly takes longer over a route than the others, then you have the evidence to investigate the reason. A visible camera will also lessen the likelihood of vandalism or theft of goods from parked vehicles.

Reducing insurance premiums is always near the top of the list for any fleet manager’s budget. It’s immensely time-consuming providing the paperwork and trying to prove a claim without any evidence, and insurance companies can be notoriously slow. The rise in cash-for-crash incidents and false claims can cost businesses millions of pounds, but reliable video footage will cut down time spent sorting a claim. Where an insurance company may otherwise have offered 50:50 liability because of a lack of witnesses, the film will give you the proof you need.

Our Mobile Digital Recorder can save you money and provide reassurance in the event of an accident. It includes four-channel mobile DVR with a 500Gb hard drive, and eight-channel 1TB models. Both include models with Wi-Fi and /or 4G connectivity capabilities.

Our Camera Monitor Systems enable drivers and operators to maneuver safely, with ultrasonic blind spot detection warning drivers of approaching pedestrians and other hazards. Efficiency is increased as a result, helping drivers to reduce downtime and making significant cost savings.
